Horse Show Trunk Buying Guide: Everything You Need to Know
Share
A horse show trunk — also called a tack trunk, equestrian trunk or competition tack box — is one of the most useful investments a competing rider can make. This guide covers everything you need to know before buying.
What is a horse show trunk?
A horse show trunk is a heavy-duty, wheeled storage case designed for equestrian use. Unlike regular suitcases or sports bags, they're built to cope with:
- Stable environments (shavings, mud, dampness)
- Loading and unloading from horse trailers and lorries
- The weight of equestrian gear (boots, helmets, body protectors, blankets)
- Rough treatment in busy show paddocks
The best tack trunks are made from high-density polypropylene — the same type of material used in tool cases and industrial containers. They have wheels, carry handles, and secure latches.
Tack trunk sizes: what fits?
Equestrian trunks generally come in three sizes:
Small / MINI tack trunks
Fits: riding helmet, gloves, spurs, body protector, one pair of boots, a small grooming kit. Ideal for: one-day shows, young riders, as a supplementary trunk alongside a larger one.
Medium / MIDI tack trunks
Fits: full competition outfit (jacket, breeches, boots, gloves, helmet), leg boots for one horse, full grooming kit, spare equipment. Ideal for: most adult amateur riders at regular shows.
Large / MAXI tack trunks
Fits: multiple competition outfits, leg boots for two or more horses, blankets, complete grooming kit, spare tack and tools. Ideal for: professionals, multi-day events, trainers managing several horses.
Tack trunk materials
- Polypropylene: the industry standard. Lightweight, impact-resistant, weatherproof. This is what Alfako uses — the best choice for most riders.
- Fibreglass: heavier and more expensive. Was popular before polypropylene. Still used for custom-built trunks.
- Wood/MDF: traditional tack trunks. Heavy, can warp in damp conditions. Mainly decorative now.
What to look for in a tack trunk
- Wheels and castors: essential for moving a full trunk. Look for smooth-rolling, replaceable wheels.
- Lid closure: secure latches that don't pop open in transport. Some riders add padlocks.
- Interior: flat internal space is most flexible. Some riders add foam inserts or removable trays.
- Colour: many riders choose to match their stable colours or personalise with stickers.
- Brand: buy from a reputable equestrian brand. Alfako (Spanish), Busse (German) and Horseware are among the established names.
Tack trunk vs tack room cabinet
If you need permanent storage in your stable rather than a portable trunk, consider an equestrian cabinet (also called a tack room cabinet or saddle cabinet). These are fixed units with compartments for saddles, bridles and accessories — built from steel or aluminium for durability.
