Caring for your horse's hooves is an essential part of daily maintenance. Dry or brittle hooves can cause lameness and pain. Hoof oil and hoof paste are the two key products for their maintenance.

How to apply hoof oil
- Clean the hoof with a hoof pick, removing dirt and debris.
- Apply the oil with a brush to the outer wall, from the coronary band (top) downwards.
- Include the coronary band: this is where the hoof grows and hydration is most important.
- Do not over-apply: the hoof should absorb, not be saturated.
Dry hooves vs. excessively wet hooves
Dry hooves are fragile and prone to chipping. Excessively wet hooves become soft and infectious (risk of thrush). The goal is balance: flexible but firm hooves. In very humid areas (Galicia, Basque Country), prioritize cleaning over hydration.
