Protections for Dressage Horse: Permitted Boots and Bandages
In competitive dressage, the use of leg protection on the horse is regulated. Not all boots are allowed in competition. This guide clarifies what you can and cannot use.
FEI Regulations on Dressage Leg Protection
According to current FEI rules for dressage:
- Leg protection is only allowed during the warm-up phase, not in the competition arena.
- In the official test, the horse must be without any leg protection.
- The use of boots and bandages is permitted during training sessions and the warm-up before the test.
Permitted Leg Protection in Dressage Training
| Protection | Function | Time of Use |
|---|---|---|
| Dressage boots | Cannon and fetlock | Warm-up, training |
| Polo wraps | Tendon support | Training |
| Neoprene boots | General protection | Training |
| Cohesive bandages | Protection after minor injury | Only with veterinary indication |
Recommended Protection Routine in Training
For daily dressage work: front boots (higher risk of striking between legs) and polo wraps on the hind legs (tendon support in extension work and collection work). Remove everything before entering any competition test.
