Dressage vs. Jumping Riding Helmets: Differences and Regulations

Dressage Helmet
In dressage, aesthetics are as important as safety. The RFHE and FEI regulations state:
- Black color mandatory in high-level official competitions.
- Top hat (cup helmet) allowed in some lower categories.
- FEI competitions require a helmet that complies with the accepted quality control standards and markings on the current list.
- For basic/regional level dressage: EN 1384 is sufficient.
Show Jumping Helmet
In show jumping, protection is the priority. Falls in show jumping are statistically more frequent than in dressage:
- FEI show jumping requires a helmet that complies with the accepted standards and markings on the current list.
- Colors: black, navy, or any dark color depending on the category.
- Short visor or no visor: must not interfere with vision when approaching an obstacle.
- Some show jumpers use helmets with MIPS for added protection.
Helmets Valid for Both Disciplines
Most VG1 helmets are valid for both dressage and show jumping. The difference lies in the design (top hat vs. sports helmet) and the regulations of each competition. Always consult the specific federation rules before competing.
