Horse Girth: Buying Guide — Sizes, Materials, and Types
The horse girth is the element that fastens the saddle to the horse's back. A poorly adjusted or damaged girth can cause chafing, sores, and even cause the saddle to shift during riding. Choosing wisely is essential for the animal's well-being.
What length girth does my horse need?
The length depends on the type of saddle and the horse's barrel circumference. The correct girth should be about 10-15 cm below the knee rolls when fastened. To measure it:
- Place the saddle on the horse without the girth.
- Measure from the girth buckle on the left side of the saddle, under the belly, to the right buckle.
- Subtract 15 cm (to allow for the buckles).
The most common sizes for adult horses range between 100 and 130 cm for English girths, and between 100 and 120 cm for dressage girths.
Types of girths by discipline
- English girth: longer, with buckles at both ends. For jumping and dressage English saddles.
- Dressage girth: shorter and wider, with an anatomical shape to protect the elbow. Specific for dressage saddles with long billets.
- Western girth: of a different design, used with ties instead of buckles. Usually made of mohair or synthetic material.
Materials: neoprene, leather, or cord?
- Neoprene: non-slip, easy to clean, very popular for daily use. Can generate heat in summer.
- Leather: breathable, molds to the horse with use. Requires maintenance. Ideal for competition and classical dressage.
- Cord/mohair: soft on the skin, very comfortable for horses with sensitive skin. Popular in trail riding and endurance.
- Synthetic/microfiber: combination of lightness, ease of cleaning, and lower cost. Good versatile option.
How to clean and maintain the girth
Clean the girth after each use to remove horse sweat, which can irritate the skin. Neoprene girths are washed with water and neutral soap. Leather girths are treated with saddle soap. Periodically check the condition of the side elastic: if they are dry, cracked, or lack elasticity, it's time to replace the girth.
When to replace the girth
Replace the girth when you observe: worn or inelastic elastic, leather with deep cracks, buckles that do not close properly, or edges that rub the horse. A deteriorated girth can loosen the saddle during riding.
