How to Measure Your Riding Helmet Size: Step-by-Step Guide
Knowing how to measure your riding helmet size is essential for safety. A helmet that is too large or too small does not protect properly. Follow this step-by-step guide.
Materials needed
- Flexible measuring tape (tailor's tape)
- A mirror or the help of another person
- Paper and pencil to take notes
How to measure step-by-step
- Place the measuring tape around your head, 1 cm above your eyebrows.
- Pass the tape over your ears, following the widest part of your skull at the back.
- The number in centimeters where the two ends meet is your size.
- Repeat the measurement 2-3 times to ensure accuracy.
Standard size chart
| Head cm | EU Size | UK Size | US Size |
|---|---|---|---|
| 52-53 | XS / 6½ | 6⅜ | 6½ |
| 54-55 | S / 6¾ | 6⅝ | 6¾ |
| 56-57 | M / 7 | 6⅞ | 7 |
| 58-59 | L / 7¼ | 7⅛ | 7¼ |
| 60-61 | XL / 7½ | 7⅜ | 7½ |
| 62-63 | XXL / 7¾ | 7⅝ | 7¾ |
How to tell if the helmet fits well?
A well-fitting helmet should:
- Sit horizontally on the forehead, 2 cm above the eyebrows.
- Not move when pushed from side to side.
- Not painfully compress any area.
- Have the chin strap snug: allow 2 fingers between the chin and the strap.
If you are between two sizes
Always choose the smaller size of the two. The interior lining will give slightly with use. A helmet that fits perfectly from day one may become loose in a few weeks.
