Spurs for Beginner Riders: Which to Choose and How to Use Them
When to start using spurs? Which are most suitable for beginners? This guide answers the most frequently asked questions about the first use of spurs in horseback riding.
Should beginners use spurs?
No. Spurs are a refinement aid for riders with a stable seat and leg. A beginner with unstable legs may involuntarily apply the spur, confusing the horse and creating resistance. The general rule: only use spurs when your instructor recommends it.
When the time comes: spurs for beginners
When your instructor believes you are ready, the most suitable spurs to start with are:
- Rubber spurs: No metal, impossible to prick. The softest aid.
- Short-shank spurs without a rowel: Pressure only, no points.
- Round-rowel spurs: If the horse needs more defined aid.
Shank length
| Shank Length | For whom |
|---|---|
| Very short (0-1 cm) | Beginners, short legs |
| Short (1-2 cm) | Intermediate riders, general use |
| Medium (2-3 cm) | Advanced, horses that need more aid |
| Long (3+ cm) | Only traditional Spanish dressage, haute école |
Competition regulations
In official competitions, spurs have restrictions on length and type of rowel depending on the discipline. Always check the current RFHE regulations before competing.
