Horse Blanket Guide: How Many Grams Does Your Horse Need
Choosing the right blanket for your horse can seem complicated with so many options available. This guide answers the most frequent questions: how many grams of fill your horse needs, what type of blanket to use in each situation, and how to measure for size.
The gram chart: how much fill your horse needs
The amount of fill needed depends on the outside temperature, whether the horse is clipped, and its body condition. This is the most commonly used guideline in Spain:

Types of horse blankets
Waterproof turnout blanket
For use in paddocks and pastures. Made with waterproof and breathable materials (generally nylon or polyester with a waterproof membrane). They are classified by fill weight: 0g (summer sheet), 100g, 200g, 300g, 400g.
Stable blanket
For use in the stall. Softer fabrics (fleece, cotton, wool). Not waterproof. Ideal for keeping warm in the stable and for clipped horses.
Fly sheet
Made of breathable mesh. Protects the horse from flies and insects in summer. Models with hoods are available to also protect the head and neck.
Cooler/Sweat sheet
Absorbs moisture after work or bathing. Essential in autumn and winter. It is placed over the sweaty horse and absorbs sweat to the outside, maintaining body heat.
Travel / Show blanket
For transport and presentations at competitions. Generally in the stable or club colors.
How to measure your horse for a blanket
Measure from the center of the chest to the base of the tail, following the line of the horse's side with a tape measure. This measurement in centimeters is the blanket size. Sizes range from 95cm (small ponies) to 160cm (large horses), in increments of 3-5cm.
