Riding Boot Size Guide: How to Measure and Get the Right Size
Getting the size right for riding boots can be a real challenge. Unlike regular footwear, equestrian boots must fit perfectly in both foot length and calf circumference (the part that goes up the leg). This guide will help you take the correct measurements.
Types of Riding Boots and Their Sizes
Tall Riding Boots
Tall riding boots reach up to the knee. To choose your size, you need to measure:
- Foot length (EU) — The standard size
- Calf circumference — The widest part of your calf, in centimeters
- Shaft height — The distance from the floor to the back of your bent knee
Paddock Boots (Short)
Paddock boots only cover the foot and ankle. They are worn with chaps. You only need the standard foot size.
Wellington / Field Boots
Generally one size larger than normal footwear, as they are worn with thick socks.

How to Measure Boot Shaft
For tall boots, shaft measurement is crucial:
- Stand with your leg straight
- Measure the circumference at the widest point of your calf (about 15 cm above the ankle)
- Measure the shaft height: from the floor to the back of your knee with your leg slightly bent

- Try them on at the end of the day — Feet swell during the day, just like with shoes
- Wear your riding socks — Thickness affects the fit
- Leather adapts — Genuine leather boots mold to the foot with use (need breaking in)
- In doubt between sizes: choose the larger one — It's better to have space than tightness during physical activity
- Field boots should fit snugly — So they don't move in the stirrup
