Equestrian Federation License: How to Obtain It and What It's For
To compete officially in Spain, riders and horses need a federation license. Here we explain how to obtain it, how much it costs, and what it's for.
What is a federation license?
The Royal Spanish Equestrian Federation (RFHE) license certifies the rider to compete in official events on the national circuit. Without it, you cannot participate in officially scored competitions.

How to obtain the license
- Contact your Regional Federation (Galician, Madrilenian, Basque, etc.).
- Fill out the online or in-person form.
- Submit the required documentation: DNI (National Identity Document), photo, medical certificate (in some cases).
- Pay the annual fee.
- Receive the digital or physical license depending on the federation.
Do I need a license to train?
No. The license is only for official competition. For classes and training at your usual equestrian center, you do not need to be federated. However, the license includes civil liability insurance, which is highly recommended.
