Types of Fasteners on Horse Blankets: Surcingles, Leg Straps, and Fastening Systems
The fastening system of a horse blanket is as important as the material. A poor fit can cause the blanket to twist, rub, or come loose. Knowing the different fastening systems will help you choose the right blanket.
Main fastening systems
| System | Position | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Chest straps | Front | Basic front fastening |
| Surcingles | Back | Prevents the blanket from moving forward |
| Leg straps | Between hind legs | Prevents the blanket from twisting |
| Belly band | Under the chest | Central fastening |
| Tail flap | Tail area | Prevents the blanket from shifting |
Leg straps or back surcingles?
This is one of the big decisions. Leg straps pass between the hind legs forming a figure 8. They are the safest system for active horses that roll or run in the paddock. Back surcingles go from side to side under the tail and are simpler to adjust but less secure for very active animals.
How to adjust leg straps correctly
Each leg strap passes through the inside of the corresponding hind leg and attaches to the ring on the opposite side. The correct adjustment allows a hand to pass through (not tight) but prevents the horse from lifting its leg without the strap offering resistance.
