Origin
The Ministry describes it as a breed native to the Basque Country whose presence dates back, according to cave paintings, to more than 30,000 years ago. It remained pure until recent times. In some areas, however, it was crossed with outside breeds, and that mixing even endangered its existence.
Today it is bred primarily in the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country, and there are also specimens in Navarre and southern France.
What it is like: morphology
The official sheet defines it as an elipometric, straight to sub-concave profile, and mediolinear pony: low weight for its size, a straight or slightly concave profile, and balanced proportions.
- Height: 124 cm reference, in both males and females. It is clearly a pony.
- Weight: about 225 kg for males and 185 kg for females.
- Coat: in the past, several were accepted. Today the standard only allows what the Ministry calls "very dark chestnut-black coat."
What it is used for
Its traditional use was for hauling and traction, which is becoming less frequent. Today the breed is oriented towards sports activities and equestrian tourism in mountain areas, where its size and sure-footedness on difficult terrain are an advantage.
How it is raised
The system is extensive and very close to wild life. According to the official sheet, for nine months of the year, it lives practically feral in the mountains. During the three winter months, it moves to pastures or semi-stabling.
Breeding program and federation
The breed has an approved official breeding program. In the Basque Country, it is managed by the Federation of Pottoka Breeders (E.PO.FE), which brings together the breeders' associations of Gipuzkoa, Bizkaia, and Álava. Its website, pottoka.info, publishes its calls and information about the breed.
Equipment for a pony like the pottoka
With a height of 124 cm, the pottoka needs small pony-sized equipment. Halters are based on head size and blankets on body length, so it is advisable to measure before buying. To estimate its weight with a measuring tape, you can use our horse weight calculator.
