First Horse Riding Lesson: What to Wear and What to Expect
Having your first riding lesson and not knowing what to bring? Don't worry. This guide tells you exactly what you need for the first day and what you can expect from your first experience on horseback.
The bare essentials for the first lesson
- Riding helmet: This is the only essential item you should buy beforehand. Many centers lend helmets, but for hygiene, it's better to have your own.
- Long trousers without inner seams: Jeans, thick leggings, or sports trousers. Trousers with thick inner seams chafe a lot.
- Footwear with a small heel: Any boot or shoe with a 2-3 cm heel and a smooth sole. Sports shoes are NOT suitable (they can get caught in the stirrup).
- Optional gloves: Not essential on the first day.
What to expect in the first class
- Introduction to the horse and explanation of the equipment parts.
- Learning how to mount and dismount safely.
- Basic position in the saddle: straight back, heels down, hands low.
- First steps at a walk with instructor assistance.
- Probably 30-45 minutes riding, no more for the first day.
What you DON'T need on the first day
You don't need spurs, a riding crop, expensive riding boots, or any specialized equipment. Most centers have everything you need to try it out. Invest in your own equipment only when you decide to continue.
