Horse Breeds for Equestrianism: Which Is Best for Each Discipline

Not all horse breeds are equally suited for all disciplines. This guide helps you understand which breeds are best for each type of riding, from dressage to endurance.

Breeds for Dressage

  • PRE (Pure Spanish Horse): The favorite for Spanish dressage and haute école. Natural cadence, noble temperament.
  • Lusitano: Very similar to the PRE, with significant participation in high-level dressage.
  • Hanoverian: The most successful breed in international Olympic dressage. A Grand Prix benchmark.
  • Westphalian and Holsteiner: Also very present in Olympic dressage.

Breeds for Show Jumping

  • Dutch Warmblood (KWPN): A global benchmark in jumping. Power and reflection.
  • Selle Français: The French jumping breed, with many Olympic champions.
  • Oldenburg: German, versatile for dressage and jumping.
  • Thoroughbred: Speed and power for high-speed jumping.

Breeds for Endurance and Trail

  • Arabian: The king of endurance due to its stamina, metabolic efficiency, and large heart.
  • Anglo-Arabian: Arabian × Thoroughbred cross, balancing speed and endurance.

Breeds for Beginners and General Use

Crossbred ponies and crossbred cold-blooded horses are ideal for beginners: calm temperament, lower reactivity, and lower maintenance costs. PREs and Lusitanos are also excellent for beginners due to their disposition.
