Dressage has one of the most defined dress codes of all equestrian sports. Whether for daily training or competition, the dressage rider must be perfectly equipped. This guide explains everything you need to know.
Dressage Apparel for Training
For daily training, there are no strict regulations, but certain conventions are followed:
- Fullgrip breeches — Full seat grip for maximum adherence in the dressage position
- Technical T-shirt or polo shirt — Breathable. Usually in a neutral color (black, navy blue, white)
- Black leather boots — Tradition dictates black for dressage
- Riding helmet — Mandatory for safety, although a top hat is allowed in advanced competition
- Working gloves — Black or grey. Discreet and functional
Dressage Competition Attire
The RFHE/FEI regulations establish the following requirements:
Basic and Club Categories
- White or light beige breeches
- Dark jacket (black, navy blue, burgundy)
- White shirt with a tie or neck scarf
- Riding helmet with standards and markings accepted by current regulations
- Black boots (tall boots or paddock boots + half chaps)
- White gloves or gloves the color of the jacket
Advanced Categories (GP, GP Special)
- Black dressage tailcoat
- White breeches with suspenders
- Top hat (helmet optional)
- Mandatory spurs (short gold spurs)
- White gloves

Spurs in Dressage: When and Which Ones
Spurs in classical dressage are a subtle aid, not an instrument of punishment. At advanced levels, they are mandatory. The most commonly used spurs in classical dressage are:
- Short spurs without rowel — For basic and intermediate levels
- Spurs with rigid rowel — For advanced levels, more precise action
- Gold spurs — Traditional with tailcoats, for competition
