Cohesive Bandages for Horses: When to Use Them and How to Apply Them

Cohesive bandages are one of the most versatile products in an equestrian first aid kit. Unlike traditional polo wraps, they stick to themselves without sticking to the horse's hair. Here's when and how to use them.

What is a cohesive bandage?

It's a type of elastic bandage that sticks to itself but not to skin or hair. It allows for uniform pressure without the risk of slipping or coming undone during movement. The most well-known brands are Vetrap and similar products.

When to use cohesive bandages

• Emergencies: To secure dressings or cotton bandages until you reach the vet.
• Minor injuries: Small cuts or abrasions that need protection.
• Post-workout: For horses with hot tendons (always over cotton).
• Joint support: Only with veterinary advice. Incorrect bandaging can cause more harm than good.

How to apply a cohesive bandage correctly

1. First, apply clean, dry cotton padding.
2. Begin bandaging from the fetlock upwards.
3. Overlap the previous wrap by 2/3 on each pass.
4. Do not stretch too tightly: the bandage should be firm but not constricting.
5. Finish with several wraps at the top and fold the final edge.

⚠️ A bandage that is too tight can cause tissue necrosis. When in doubt, contact your veterinarian.
