Riding helmets: which regulations you need and how to choose the right size
The helmet is the only piece of riding equipment with mandatory regulations. Before looking at design or price, you must check the inside label. This guide explains which certifications exist, which one is required for you, and how to choose your size.
The three regulations that matter
| Standard | Origin | Where it is required |
|---|---|---|
| VG1 01.040 | European | FEI competitions. It is the minimum required in Spain |
| ASTM/SEI | American | American events and some show jumping disciplines |
| PAS 015 | British | Cross-country and eventing. The most demanding in terms of impact |
A helmet can carry several at once. If you compete in FEI, VG1 is non-negotiable; if you do cross-country, also look for PAS 015.
What is in our catalog
We have 182 helmet models available in 3,104 size and finish combinations, from 12 brands: Kask, Freejump, Equestro, HKM, QHP, and Equithème, among others.
The range is wide because it covers two distinct markets: from entry-level models to personalized Kask finishes that exceed €1,700. If you are starting out, the range between €100 and €300 includes 403 items with full certification.
How to choose the size
- Measure the circumference of your head with a measuring tape, one finger above your eyebrows and over the widest part of the back of your head.
- The helmet should fit firmly without the chin strap fastened: if it moves when you tilt your head forward, it is too big.
- It should not leave a mark on your forehead after 20 minutes. If it does, it is too small.
- If you are between two sizes, choose the smaller one and adjust it with the interior adjustment system.
When to replace it
After any fall involving a head impact, even if no damage is visible. The interior polystyrene compresses only once and does not recover. Also due to age: most manufacturers specify between three and five years from the production date, which is printed inside.
A second-hand helmet is not a recommended purchase for this reason: there is no way to know if it has received an impact.
Ventilation and lining
For summer, wide vents and a removable, washable lining. Fixed linings accumulate sweat and cannot be cleaned properly. In winter, ventilation matters less and fit takes priority.
