How to Properly Adjust a Halter to a Horse

This is our step-by-step guide to adjusting a horse bridle. We have created it based on the most frequently asked questions we receive from our customers at our physical store in A Coruña and via WhatsApp.

What you need

  • New or clean bridle
  • Tied horse
  • Fingers to check clearance

Detailed steps

Step 1: Put the bridle on

Pass the reins over the neck first. Place the bit in the mouth and then adjust the straps over the head, behind the ears.

Step 2: Adjust the browband

The browband should not press against the forehead. Place two fingers between the browband and the forehead: there should be that much space.

Step 3: Adjust the throatlatch

Pass your entire hand between the throatlatch and the horse’s throat. It should fit loosely — if it presses, let it out a hole.

Step 4: Adjust the noseband

The noseband goes over the nose. It should be 2 fingers below the cheekbone and 2 fingers above the corners of the mouth. Place two fingers between the nose and the noseband.

Step 5: Adjust the bit height

The bit should rest at the corners of the mouth, creating 1 or 2 gentle wrinkles. If it is too low, it will hit the teeth; too high, and it will hurt the corners of the mouth.

Step 6: Check symmetry

Check that both sides are at the same level. Asymmetry in the buckles is a sign of poor adjustment.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Don't measure/adjust in a hurry: every minute spent here avoids discomfort for the horse or the rider.
