How to Put a Winter Horse Blanket On Your Horse

This is our step-by-step guide to putting a winter rug on your horse. We have created it based on the most frequently asked questions from our customers in our physical store in A Coruña and via WhatsApp.
What you need
- Correct size rug
- Clean and dry horse
- Help if the horse moves
Detailed steps
Step 1: Confirm the horse is dry
NEVER place a rug on a wet or sweaty horse. Wait until it is completely dry or use a wicking rug first.
Step 2: Fold the rug in half
Fold the rug lengthwise and place it on the horse, approximately in the middle of its back.
Step 3: Unfold to the side
Unfold half of the rug to one side, then repeat with the other side. This prevents sudden movements over the horse.
Step 4: Adjust the chest area
Close the chest with the buckle(s). The chest should be snug without being too tight. An open hand should fit.
Step 5: Attach the cross surcingles
Cross the surcingles in an X under the belly and attach each one to the opposite side. There should be a hand's width of slack between the surcingle and the belly.
Step 6: Attach the tail strap
If the rug has a tail strap, pass it under the tail and attach it to the other side of the rug. This prevents the wind from lifting the back part.
Step 7: Check fit after 15 min
After a while, check again. The rug should not slip sideways, and the surcingle should not be loose.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Don't measure/fit in a hurry: every minute invested here prevents discomfort for the horse or rider.
- Don't rely on "more or less": equestrian measurements and adjustments require precision.
