How to Place the Saddle Pad and Saddle Correctly
Updated: May 2026 · Guide by Rincón del Valle Technical Team
This is our step-by-step guide for placing a saddle pad and saddle on a horse. We have developed it based on the most frequently asked questions by our customers at our physical store in A Coruña and via WhatsApp.
What you need
- Clean saddle pad
- Saddle
- Girth
Detailed steps
Step 1: Brush the horse's back
Make sure there is no loose hair, mud, or dried sweat in the area where the saddle pad will go. Brush in the direction of the hair.
Step 2: Place the saddle pad
Place the saddle pad on the horse's withers, slightly forward. Then slide it back following the hair. This prevents chafing.
Step 3: Check position and symmetry
Check that it is centered and symmetrical. It should extend 5 cm in front of the saddle and 5 cm behind it.
Step 4: Place the saddle on top
Carefully place the saddle on top of the saddle pad. Correct position: the flap falls just behind the horse's elbow, not on top of the scapula.
Step 5: Lift the saddle pad at the withers
Slightly lift the saddle pad in the wither area (under the saddle) to create an air channel and avoid pressure.
Step 6: Fasten the girth loosely
Fasten the girth loosely at first. Walk the horse for 1-2 minutes and then tighten the girth definitively.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Don't rush when measuring/placing: every minute spent here prevents discomfort for the horse or rider.
- Don't rely on "more or less": equestrian measurements and adjustments require precision.
