How to Clean and Care for Leather Riding Boots

This is our step-by-step guide for cleaning and caring for leather riding boots. We have created it based on the most frequent questions we receive from our customers at our physical store in A Coruña and via WhatsApp.
What you need
- Soft cotton cloth
- Soft-bristle brush
- Leather grease or cream (Marjoman, Effax, or similar)
- Specific leather cleaner
- Boot trees for storage
Detailed steps
Step 1: Remove mud and dry dirt
Using a soft brush or a dry cloth, remove any mud and sand that has stuck to the boots. Pay extra attention to seams and creases.
Step 2: Clean with a damp cloth
Take a cloth dampened (NOT soaked) in warm water and wipe the surface of the leather. If there are stains, use a specific leather cleaner.
Step 3: Let air dry
Place the boots in an upright position in a cool, ventilated area, away from direct heat sources. Never use a hairdryer.
Step 4: Apply grease or moisturizing cream
Once dry, apply a thin layer of specific leather grease (Marjoman, Effax, or similar). Rub in with a soft cloth using circular motions.
Step 5: Let the grease absorb
Wait 30 minutes for the leather to absorb the grease. Then, remove any excess with a clean cloth.
Step 6: Buff for shine
Using a clean cloth, buff the surface to achieve a shine and remove any product residue.
Step 7: Store with boot trees
Insert boot trees (plastic or wooden) into the boots so they maintain their shape. Store in a dry place, away from direct sunlight.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Do not measure/fit in a hurry: every minute spent here prevents discomfort for the horse or rider.
- Do not rely on "more or less": equestrian measurements and adjustments require precision.
