How to Clean and Care for Leather Riding Boots

Updated: May 2026 · Guide by the Rincón del Valle technical team

This is our step-by-step guide to cleaning and caring for leather riding boots. We have compiled it based on the most frequently asked questions from our customers in our physical store in A Coruña and via WhatsApp.

⏱ Total time: 20 minutes

What you need

  • Soft cotton cloth
  • Soft-bristled brush
  • Leather grease or cream (Marjoman, Effax, similar)
  • Specific leather cleaner
  • Boot trees for storage

Detailed steps

Step 1: Remove mud and dry dirt

Using a soft brush or dry cloth, remove any caked-on mud and sand. Pay special attention to seams and creases.

Step 2: Clean with a damp cloth

Take a cloth dampened (NOT soaked) in warm water and wipe the leather surface. If there are stains, use a specific leather cleaner.

Step 3: Air dry

Place the boots upright in a cool, well-ventilated area, away from direct heat sources. Never use a hairdryer.

Step 4: Apply grease or moisturizing cream

Once dry, apply a thin layer of specific leather grease (Marjoman, Effax, or similar). Rub with a soft cloth in circular motions.

Step 5: Allow the grease to absorb

Wait 30 minutes for the leather to absorb the grease. Then remove any excess with a clean cloth.

Step 6: Polish for shine

With a clean cloth, polish the surface to achieve a shine and remove any product residue.

Step 7: Store with boot trees

Place boot trees (plastic or wooden) inside the boots to help them maintain their shape. Store in a dry place, away from direct sunlight.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Don't rush when measuring/fitting: every minute spent here prevents discomfort for the horse or rider.
  • Don't rely on "more or less": equestrian measurements and adjustments require precision.
