How to Correctly Apply Horse Bandages — Tutorial

This is our step-by-step guide to bandaging horse legs. We have created it based on the most frequently asked questions from our customers at our physical store in A Coruña and via WhatsApp.
What you need
- Elastic bandage (3-4 meters)
- Cotton or under-bandage padding
- Velcro closure
- Scissors (if cutting is necessary)
Detailed steps
Step 1: Clean and check the leg
Make sure the leg is clean (free of mud or sand) and check for any wounds. Brush with a soft-bristled brush.
Step 2: Place the protective cotton
Apply a layer of absorbent cotton or specific padding underneath. It should cover from just below the knee/hock down to the fetlock.
Step 3: Start the bandage
Place the end of the bandage on the inside of the cannon bone, halfway up. Hold firmly.
Step 4: Wrap with even tension
Make one full turn to secure, then spiral upwards, maintaining moderate but constant tension. Each turn should overlap the previous one by 50%.
Step 5: Go up to below the knee
Continue upwards until you reach just below the knee (on forelegs) or the hock (on hind legs). NEVER bandage the joint itself.
Step 6: Go down and finish at the fetlock
Once at the top, spiral back down until you cover the fetlock (without tightening the flexor tendon that runs along the back).
Step 7: Close with Velcro
Finish with the Velcro on the outside of the cannon bone (never towards the tendon). Ensure it is neither too loose nor too tight.
Step 8: Check the tension
Slide two fingers under the bandage. If they slide in comfortably and no marks are left on the leg when removed, the tension is correct.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Do not rush the measuring/placement: every minute spent here prevents discomfort for the horse or rider.
- Do not rely on "more or less": equestrian measurements and adjustments require precision.
