How to Correctly Apply Horse Bandages — Tutorial
Updated: May 2026 · Guide by the Rincón del Valle technical team
This is our step-by-step guide to bandaging a horse's limbs. We have prepared it based on the most frequently asked questions from our customers in our physical store in A Coruña and via WhatsApp.
What you'll need
- Elastic bandage (3-4 meters)
- Cotton or padding underneath
- Velcro closure
- Scissors (if cutting is needed)
Detailed steps
Step 1: Clean and check the leg
Make sure the leg is clean (free of mud and sand) and check for any wounds. Brush with a soft-bristled brush.
Step 2: Place the protective cotton
Put a layer of hydrophilic cotton or specific padding underneath. It should cover from just below the knee/hock down to the fetlock.
Step 3: Start bandaging
Place the end of the bandage on the inside of the cannon bone, at mid-height. Hold firmly.
Step 4: Wrap with even tension
Make a full turn to secure and then spiral upwards, maintaining moderate but constant tension. Each turn should overlap the previous one by 50%.
Step 5: Go up to below the knee
Continue upwards until you reach just below the knee (on front legs) or the hock (on hind legs). NEVER bandage the knee.
Step 6: Go down and finish at the fetlock
Once at the top, spiral downwards again to cover the fetlock (without tightening the flexor tendon that runs behind it).
Step 7: Close with Velcro
Finish with the Velcro on the outside of the cannon bone (never towards the tendon). Ensure it is neither loose nor too tight.
Step 8: Check the tension
Insert two fingers under the bandage. If they slide in comfortably and leave no marks on the leg when removed, the tension is correct.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Don't measure/place in a hurry: every minute invested here prevents discomfort for the horse or rider.
- Don't rely on "more or less": equestrian measurements and adjustments require precision.
