Summer horse care

Summer presents specific challenges: intense heat, dehydration, insect pressure, and declining pasture quality. A good summer plan prevents heatstroke and dehydration colic, keeping the horse comfortable and fit.

Hydration

Water consumption can double in summer. Water should always be available, clean, and fresh. Silent dehydration is a frequent cause of impaction colic during this season.

Work Schedule

It is advisable to work early in the morning or at the end of the day, avoiding the middle hours. If working in the sun is the only option, reduce intensity and lengthen the stride, ruling out strenuous cardiovascular efforts.

Heatstroke and Electrolytes

In case of rapid breathing, dark mucous membranes, and high temperature, immediate action is required: shade, cold water on large veins, and a vet call. Electrolytes are indicated when there is significant sustained sweating, always with water available.

Flies and Insects

Pressure from flies and horseflies causes stress and dermatitis. Combined measures (mask, fly sheet, authorized repellent, manure management) work better than a single one.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much water does a horse drink in summer?

It can go from the normal 25-55 liters to almost double. Continuous access to clean water is a priority.

Is it good to hose down a horse after work?

Yes, except during peak cardiac effort. Start with the limbs and remove excess water so as not to leave it soaked in the sun.

Should electrolytes be given daily?

Not by default; only with significant sustained sweating or after demanding efforts, and with water available.
