Equestrian Tack Glossary
Equestrian equipment has its own vocabulary that is worth mastering to buy well and understand other riders. This glossary explains the most common terms for riding gear and saddlery.
Terms
- Stirrup Leather
- Leather strap from which the stirrup hangs and which adjusts its length.
- Cantle/Pommel padding
- Reinforcement or padding of the saddle flaps that helps stabilize the rider's leg.
- Surcingle
- Wide girth with rings used for ground work, long reining, and bareback exercises.
- Noseband
- Strap of the bridle that goes around the horse's nose, with various types depending on the discipline.
- Throatlatch
- Strap of the bridle that passes under the throat to prevent the crownpiece from slipping off.
- Crownpiece
- Part of the bridle that passes behind the ears and holds the assembly together.
- Browband
- Strap of the bridle that crosses the horse's forehead, below the ears.
- Saddle Pad/Sweat Pad
- Textile piece between the saddle and the horse that absorbs sweat and protects the back.
- Crupper
- Strap that goes from the saddle to the base of the tail to prevent the saddle from slipping forward.
- Breastplate
- Strap that goes around the horse's chest to prevent the saddle from slipping backward.
- Stirrup Iron
- Metal ring where the rider places their foot; also called a stirrup.
- Snaffle Bit
- Simple mouthpiece, the most basic and gentle, with one or two joints.
- Cavesson
- Metal piece placed over the nose for lunging or in certain styles of dressage.
- Stud
- Piece placed in the horseshoe to improve grip on slippery terrain.
- Bridle
- Set of straps that fits on the horse's head to guide it or hold the bit.
- Lead Rope
- Rope or strap that attaches to the bridle to lead and tie the horse.
