How to Start Horseback Riding — A Beginner's Guide

Starting to ride horses is an exciting decision but it requires some wise choices to ensure a positive experience. Here is your complete roadmap.

Choose a good equestrian center

Look for a certified center with qualified instructors (FEH or RFHE), well-cared-for horses (check their physical condition), and a clean riding arena. Visit before signing up. Ask about the price per hour versus class packages.

The first 10 lessons

You will learn: basic posture, contact with the bit, the walk, posting trot, and position in the saddle. DO NOT expect to canter in the first few weeks — it is normal and appropriate.

Absolutely essential minimum equipment

Riding helmet with the certification indicated by the manufacturer (you can use the center's at first, but buy your own within 2-3 lessons). Boots with a heel (not sneakers — your foot will get stuck in the stirrup). Pants that are not cotton (they cause chafing).

Recommended equipment starting from the 5th lesson

Technical riding pants with silicone knee grips (€40-60), thin gloves, technical socks. Total: €100-150 and you will ride much more comfortably.

Common mistakes to avoid

Buying expensive equipment before knowing if you like it — start cheap. Wanting to canter quickly — learn the basic gaits first. Buying tall boots before knowing your actual size — start with short boots + chaps.

After 6 months

If you fall in love with horse riding, you can invest in mid-range equipment (full-seat silicone pants, entry-level tall boots, your own nice helmet). Total ~€400-600.
