What is Equestrian Polo? — Rules, Equipment, Levels

Polo is a team equestrian discipline where two teams of 4 mounted players attempt to score a goal against the opposing team using a mallet and a ball. It is one of the oldest in the world (originating in Persia, 600 B.C.).

Levels and handicap

Each player has a handicap from -2 to +10 goals. The world elite (Adolfo Cambiaso, Pablo Mac Donough) are at +10. Spain has tournaments in Sotogrande and Madrid.

Rider gear

Specific polo helmet with visor or face mask (more reinforced than general riding helmets), white breeches, brown polo boots, mallet (various diameters and lengths available), specific gloves.

Polo ponies

Argentine crossbreeds are predominant for their speed, agility, and acceptance of the game. A professional player uses 4-8 horses in a single match (changing each chukka).

Horse tack

Polo saddle (variant of the English saddle, flatter seat), bridle with noseband, mandatory bandages on all four legs, small saddle pad.
