What is Equestrian Endurance Riding? — Horse Endurance

Endurance riding (also called raid) is the equestrian discipline of resistance, where horse and rider cover long distances (40 to 160 km) over natural terrain, with mandatory veterinary checks that ensure the welfare of the horse.

Distances and levels

Initiation: 30-40 km. Intermediate categories: 60-80 km. Advanced: 100, 120 and 160 km. The maximum international level is CEI 4* at 160 km (Endurance World Championship).

Veterinary checks

Every 25-35 km there is a mandatory veterinary check. Veterinarians evaluate heart rate, hydration, and lameness. If the horse's heart rate does not recover below 64 bpm within 20 minutes, it is eliminated.

Predominant breeds

The Arabian is the king of endurance for its cardiovascular capacity. Anglo-Arabs, Criollos, and resistant crossbreeds also compete. Heavy European horses (PRE, KWPN) are not suitable.

Rider's equipment

VG1 helmet mandatory in many categories. Comfortable clothing for many hours on horseback: technical tights or pants, breathable polo shirt or T-shirt, identification vest, low-cut footwear (paddock boots + light gaiters). Constant hydration.

Horse's equipment

Light endurance saddle (comfortable seat, short skirts, ventilated panel), endurance bridle (often with a serreta and air bit), breastplate, crupper for descents, technical absorption pad, saddlebags for hydration and tools.

Recommendations

Endurance saddles: Barefoot, Wintec, specific models. Bridles: with serreta or air bit. Important: very important hydration with electrolytes and horseshoe adjustment.
