What is Equestrian Endurance Riding? — Horse Endurance

Endurance riding is the equestrian discipline of stamina, where horse and rider travel long distances (40 to 160 km) over natural terrain, with mandatory veterinary checks that ensure the horse's welfare.

Distances and levels

Beginner: 30-40 km. Intermediate categories: 60-80 km. Advanced: 100, 120, and 160 km. The maximum international level is the CEI 4* at 160 km (Endurance World Championship).

Veterinary checks

Every 25-35 km, there is a mandatory veterinary check. Veterinarians evaluate heart rate, hydration, and lameness. If the horse does not recover a heart rate below 64 bpm within 20 minutes, it is eliminated.

Predominant breeds

The Arabian is the king of endurance due to its cardiovascular capacity. Anglo-Arabs, Criollos, and hardy crossbreeds also compete. Heavy European horses (PRE, KWPN) are not suitable.

Rider equipment

VG1 helmet mandatory in many categories. Comfortable clothing for long hours in the saddle: technical leggings or breeches, breathable polo or t-shirt, identification vest, low-cut footwear (boots + lightweight gaiters). Constant hydration.

Horse equipment

Lightweight endurance saddle (comfortable seat, short flaps, ventilated panel), endurance bridle (often with a serreta and air-cushioned bit), breastplate, crupper for descents, technical absorbent saddle pad, saddlebags for hydration and tools.

Recommendations

Endurance saddles: Barefoot, Wintec, specific models. Bridles: with serreta or air-cushioned. Care: hydration with electrolytes and horseshoe adjustment are very important.
