Can two people ride one horse?
It is not advisable for two people to ride at once: it overloads the horse's back and compromises its safety and that of the rider.
Detailed explanation
Riding two people at once on a horse (known as riding double or riding pillion) is not a generally recommended practice. The horse's back is not designed to support the poorly distributed weight of two riders, and doing so regularly can cause back pain and injuries. Furthermore, it reduces control and safety: in case of a fright, two people are harder to manage. As a welfare rule, a horse should carry only one rider whose weight (including equipment) must bear a reasonable proportion to that of the animal. Traditional images of two people on horseback are specific situations, not an advisable use.
