My Horse Has Blanket Rubs — Causes and Solutions

Updated: May 2026 · Rincón del Valle Technical Team

The problem

"My horse has rubs or bald spots on its chest, withers, or hindquarters after wearing a blanket."

This is one of the most frequent problems clients ask us about in our physical store in A Coruña and via WhatsApp. Here, we break it down with real causes and proven solutions.

Why does this happen? — Common causes

  • Incorrect size. A blanket that is too small will pull on the chest. One that is too large will shift and rub due to movement.
  • Rough internal material. Cheap blankets with rough synthetic linings can cause accumulated micro-abrasions.
  • Dirty or sweaty blanket. A dirty (unwashed) blanket causes more rubs than a clean one.
  • Horse movement. Very restless horses in the stable or paddock can repeatedly shift the blanket.
  • Horse anatomy. Horses with prominent shoulders (PRE, Trakehner) require blankets with an anatomical shoulder cut.

How to solve it

Solution 1: Verify the size

Measure your horse again: measuring guide. If it's between two sizes, choose the larger one.

Solution 2: Buy a blanket with a shoulder cut

Brands like Bucas, Horseware Rambo, and Kentucky have models with an anatomical cut that respects shoulder movement.

Solution 3: Use a thin underblanket

A thin inner blanket (fleece or silk) creates a cushioning layer that prevents direct rubs.

Solution 4: Wash the blanket more frequently

At least once a month with intensive use. Follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Solution 5: Apply healing cream

On the affected areas, apply healing cream (Hippomed, Vetnova) until the hair grows back.
