How to Clean Equestrian Leather Tack
Equestrian leather is a living material that requires basic care to maintain its flexibility, strength, and appearance. Well-maintained leather lasts for decades; neglected leather deteriorates in a few years. This routine takes 15-20 minutes and should be applied every 2-4 weeks depending on use.
Materials Needed
- Glycerine soap or saddle soap
- Sponge or soft cloth
- Leather grease or cream
- Dry cloth
Step-by-Step Procedure
Step 1. Remove dust and dry dirt
Using a dry cloth, wipe all straps and surfaces to remove dust, hay, and particles. Do not use water on dry dirt: it turns it into sticky mud.
Step 2. Apply glycerine soap
Lightly moisten the sponge, rub the soap without soaking it, and apply to the leather with circular movements. Cover the entire surface without creating excessive foam.
Step 3. Thoroughly clean buckles and seams
Buckles accumulate sweat and dust. Pay special attention to joints, holes, and the creased area, where the leather weakens the most.
Step 4. Remove excess with a dry cloth
Once the soap has been applied, wipe off the excess with a soft cloth. Allow the leather to breathe for 10-15 minutes.
Step 5. Apply nourishing grease or cream
With a clean cloth, spread a thin layer of grease over all the leather. Pay special attention to areas that rub or fold. Do not over-soak: excess will remain on the surface without penetrating.
Step 6. Allow to absorb for a few hours
Ideally, leave the leather in a dry place away from direct sunlight for several hours to allow the grease to penetrate. Wipe off any residue before the next use if it remains greasy.
Step 7. Final polishing
A soft cloth or soft-bristled brush will give it a shine and leave the surface residue-free.
