How to Measure Your Riding Boot Size

This is our step-by-step guide to measuring for the correct riding boot size. We have developed it based on the most frequent questions our customers ask us at our physical store in A Coruña and via WhatsApp.
What you need
- Tape measure
- Large sheet of paper
- Pencil
- Socks of the thickness you will wear for riding
Detailed steps
Step 1: Measure at the end of the day
Your feet swell during the day. Taking measurements in the afternoon provides the actual size you will have while riding.
Step 2: Place your foot on the paper
Step firmly onto a sheet of paper with your sock on. The paper should be against a wall.
Step 3: Trace the outline of your foot
With the pencil held against your foot, trace the entire outline. Include the longest toe and the heel.
Step 4: Measure length and width
Measure in cm from the heel mark to the tip of the longest toe (length). Also, measure the width at the widest part of your foot.
Step 5: Measure calf height (tall boots)
For tall boots, measure the circumference of your calf at its thickest point. Critical: a boot that is too tight won't go up; one that is too loose will slip.
Step 6: Measure height from the ground
For tall boots, measure from the ground to just below the knee. This is usually between 42-50 cm depending on the rider's height.
Step 7: Check the chart for each brand
IMPORTANT: every brand has its own chart. HKM, Ariat, De Niro, and Stübben have different sizing. Ask us if you have questions (info@rincondv.com).
Common mistakes to avoid
- Don't measure/stand in a hurry: every minute spent here prevents discomfort for the horse or the rider.
- Don't rely on "more or less": equestrian measurements and fittings require precision.

Boot size conversion
Place your foot on a sheet of paper and mark the heel and the longest toe. Measure that length in centimeters (in the afternoon, wearing the socks you will use for riding).

For tall boots, in addition to your foot size, you must choose shaft height (measured from the ground to the back of the knee while slightly bent) and calf width (circumference at the widest point). These categories vary by manufacturer (e.g., De Niro uses its own codes): choose the variant that matches your measurements or consult us.
