What Size Riding Boot Am I?
Updated: June 2026 · Rincón del Valle Team
What is my riding boot size?
To determine your size, measure your foot length in centimeters at the end of the day (with your heel against a wall). For example, 25 cm is equivalent to a European size 39-40. For tall boots, also measure the circumference of your calf at its widest point. Each manufacturer has its own specific chart.
Size by length
24 cm → size 38. 25 cm → 39. 26 cm → 40. 27 cm → 41. Each centimeter is approximately one size.
Calf for tall boots
Measure at the widest part. 32-34 cm → size S/M. 35-37 → M/L. 38+ → L/XL.
By brand
HKM, Cavallo, and Pikeur have different charts. Consult the specific one.

Types and differences
Tall boots cover the entire leg and are common in dressage and formal show jumping. Paddock boots reach the ankle and are combined with chaps for daily use. Western boots have a pronounced heel and ornamented shaft. Endurance or outdoor boots prioritize maximum comfort and are usually lower and more flexible. Each profile has its correct use.
Break-in and comfort
A new leather boot always requires breaking in. It should be worn for short sessions, applying specific cream. If after 15-20 uses it still rubs in specific spots, the last is likely not the right fit. Boots with elastic panels on the calf facilitate the fit for atypically shaped legs.
Frequently asked questions
How long do riding boots last?
With regular use and maintenance, a good leather boot lasts 4-8 years. Synthetic ones last slightly less.
Can they be washed with water?
Yes, with a damp cloth and glycerin soap. Do not submerge them. If they get wet, dry them at room temperature with paper inside.
Should I buy an exact size or with extra room?
Exact size, with space for a technical sock. Boots with excessive room do not provide proper support.
