My Riding Helmet Is Too Tight — Causes and Solutions
Updated: May 2026 · Rincón del Valle Technical Team
The problem
"My helmet squeezes my head, leaves a mark on my forehead, or hurts after 30 minutes of use."
This is one of the most frequent problems clients ask us about in our physical store in A Coruña and via WhatsApp. Here we break it down with real causes and proven solutions.
Why does this happen? — Common causes
- Incorrect size. The most common cause: you bought a size that is too small. Every millimeter counts in a helmet.
- Unsuitable internal padding. If the brand has several sets of padding (S, M, L), you might need a thinner one.
- Brand with specific sizing. Some brands like Samshield or Charles Owen have narrower sizing than others. A "56" in Charles Owen is not the same as in HKM.
- Round vs. oval head shape. Each brand designs helmets for a specific head shape (standard oval, Asian round, etc.). One brand might feel tight, while another doesn't.
How to solve it
Solution 1: Measure your head again
Follow our measurement guide. If the measurement doesn't match the helmet size, there's a problem.
Solution 2: Change the padding
Many helmets (Samshield, KEP, etc.) come with interchangeable padding. Ask your supplier for the next thinner set.
Solution 3: Try another brand
If the helmet always feels tight regardless of size, try a brand designed for your head shape. KEP usually fits rounder heads well.
Solution 4: Return if not adjustable
At Rincón del Valle, you have 30 days to return a helmet that doesn't fit. Better to exchange it than to suffer.
