What equipment do I need to start horseback riding?
The absolute minimum essential items to start riding are three: a VG1 approved helmet, footwear with a safety heel (boots or ankle boots), and technical riding pants. With these, you can attend your first lessons. The estimated investment is €100-150.
Approved helmet
This is the most important item. VG1 approved at a minimum. You can use the club's helmet for the first few lessons, but your own properly fitted helmet is recommended after the 3rd-4th lesson.
Footwear with a heel
The heel prevents your foot from getting stuck in the stirrup. Tall boots or ankle boots with chaps are suitable. For starting out, synthetic options work well.
Technical pants
Elastic fabric with silicone knee patches at a minimum. Avoid regular cotton, which causes chafing.
Optional for the first few weeks
Gloves (when rubbing from the reins becomes uncomfortable), technical socks, breathable polo shirt or t-shirt.

Further Information
Basic maintenance
Any equipment benefits from a minimal routine: cleaning after use, visual inspection of stitching and hardware, storage in a dry place protected from direct sunlight. Small weekly maintenance tasks prevent major breakdowns. Annual professional inspection (saddle, bit, hardware) covers what the untrained eye misses.
When to invest more
Investing in high-end equipment is justified when its use repays the cost: riders who ride daily, competition horses, industry professionals. For recreational or beginner use, the mid-range from reputable brands offers the best value. Cheap options often end up being expensive in the medium term.
