Equestrian Show Jumping Equipment Guide: What You Need to Compete

Show jumping is one of the most comprehensive and demanding disciplines in the equestrian world. To practice it safely and effectively, both rider and horse need specific, high-quality equipment. This guide explains what you need and why.

Equipment for the show jumper

Approved riding helmet

The helmet is the most important safety element. For show jumping, it is mandatory in competition. It must comply with VG1 or ASTM F1163 standards. Choose a model with ventilation, good support, and one that fits comfortably on your head without moving. Replace it every 3-5 years or after any strong impact.

BETA Level 3 Safety Vest

In eventing and cross country, the safety vest is mandatory and must be BETA Level 3, the highest level of protection. For show jumping in an indoor arena, Level 2 is sufficient, although Level 3 is always recommended. Consult our safety vest guide.

Show jumping boots and jodhpur boots

For jumping, you can use either tall boots (up to the knee) or the combination of jodhpur boots + half chaps. Jodhpur boots with half chaps offer more ankle mobility and allow for better adjustment of the knee position. Tall boots provide a more formal look and are preferred in high-level competition. The important thing is that the boot is firm at the heel and comfortable for working in a two-point position.

Show jumping breeches

Riding breeches for show jumping usually have knee patches (not full seats like dressage breeches), as the forward position requires more freedom in the pelvis. Look for elastic and breathable fabric for intense sessions. Common competition colors are beige, white, and light gray.

Riding gloves

Gloves improve grip on the reins, which is crucial when the horse is active towards the jump. For jumping, gloves with silicone grip on the palm and between the fingers are preferred, offering greater sensitivity and control. See our selection of riding gloves.

Tendon and fetlock boots

In jumping, it is essential to protect the horse's limbs. Standard equipment includes:

• Front tendon boots: protect against hock impacts, obstacle strikes, and landing stress.
• Hind fetlock boots: protect the hind fetlock from the horse hitting itself when bending its hocks.
• Coronet boots: optional, but recommended for horses that overreach.

Safety stirrups

For jumping, safety stirrups with a side-release system are highly recommended. In case of a fall, the foot is automatically released, preventing the rider from getting caught. Magnetic or offset models are popular among show jumpers of all levels. Consult our stirrup guide.

Bridle and reins

For jumping, a simple English bridle is commonly used, without a double bridle. Grip reins (leather with silicone or rubber) are the most used due to their secure grip in rainy or sweaty conditions.

Competition or stable blanket

For waiting between classes or when the horse is in its stall during the competition, always bring a light stable blanket so it doesn't get cold after exertion. In winter, add an additional thermal layer.
