Equestrian Safety Vest: A Complete Guide to Choosing Yours
A riding safety vest is one of the most important pieces of protective equipment a rider can wear. Unlike helmets, safety vests are still underutilized, especially in recreational riding. However, they can make all the difference in the event of a fall.
Why do you need a riding vest?
Falls from horses are unpredictable and can happen even to experienced riders. The vest protects the torso from impact with the ground, the horse's legs, or any obstacles. The areas it covers are: ribs and rib cage, spine, liver and kidneys, collarbones, and sternum.
BETA Certifications: Protection Levels
Riding vests must comply with the EN 13158 standard, managed by BETA. There are three levels:
- Level 1 (Yellow): Minimal protection. Only for very experienced riders in controlled conditions.
- Level 2 (Blue): For show jumping, dressage, and general riding. Good protection for most riders.
- Level 3 (Orange): Maximum protection. Mandatory for competitive cross-country.
To start, we recommend a minimum of level 2. For cross-country or show jumping, choose level 3.
How to choose the size
Measure your chest, waist, and back (from shoulder to waist). Consult the brand's size guide: sizes vary between manufacturers. The vest should fit snugly but comfortably: it shouldn't move when you shake but shouldn't impede breathing. Try it on while simulating the riding position.
How often should it be replaced?
The recommendation is every 3-5 years or immediately after an impactful fall, even if the vest appears to be in good condition. The protective foam loses its absorption capacity even if there is no visible damage. The maximum use date is usually indicated on the inside.
