Why does this happen? — Frequent causes
- Calf size below standard. Each boot size has a specific calf circumference range. If you are below that, it will be loose.
- Leather too stiff at first. New leather boots are stiff. When they "break in" after 10-20 hours of use, they can become looser if the leather was too thin.
- Defective closure. Zippers with misaligned teeth or worn Velcro progressively lose their grip.
- Incorrect style chosen. Some boots come with fixed shafts without adjustment. Options with Velcro adjustment allow for compensation.
How to solve it
Solution 1: Boots with adjustable shaft
Models with Velcro or laces allow for calf adjustment. Best for beginners or those with non-standard measurements.
Solution 2: Use elastic half chaps
If the rider's calf varies a lot, a long elastic half chap overlapping the paddock boot offers a better fit.
