How to fit an English bridle

Three points determine if a bridle is fitted correctly:

• Headpiece: It should rest behind the ears without pinching them or pressing the browband into the base of the ear.
• Noseband: Two fingers between the noseband and the nasal bone, positioned about two fingers below the cheekbone. Tightening it does not improve control and only bothers the horse.
• Throatlatch: It should fit the width of a hand turned on its side. This is the most frequent error we see in the shop.

Available sizes

This item is manufactured in Full and Cob. Cob is the size for horses with smaller heads and most large ponies; Full is the standard horse size. If your horse is between the two, measure the circumference of the headpiece from ear to ear and the length of the noseband before deciding: it is easier to adjust a Full size with higher holes than it is to stretch a Cob.

What to check before ordering

• If you are going to use it in competition, check the regulations for your discipline: some nosebands and some hardware are not permitted in dressage.
• Check if you need reins and a bit separately: unless the product description indicates otherwise, the bridle is sold alone.
• Measure the length of the cheekpieces of the bridle you currently use; it is the most reliable reference to get it right the first time.

Care

Wipe it down with a damp cloth after riding to remove sweat, which is what wears down the material the most, and apply the maintenance product appropriate for its finish. Hang it by the headpiece for storage, never folded, and let it air dry away from radiators and direct sunlight.
