How to choose a bridle

Types of nosebands

  • English or plain: the most versatile, for beginners, pleasure riding, and show jumping.
  • Flash/Combined: the English noseband with an extra strap that fastens below the bit and helps keep the mouth closed.
  • Mexican: two straps that cross over the nose; secures the mouth without putting as much pressure on the lower nose area. Widely used in show jumping and cross-country.
  • German or Hannoverian: fastens below the bit; common for young horses.

Anatomical bridles have a padded and cut-away headpiece to relieve pressure behind the ears. Dressage bridles for double bridles include a second cheek piece for the curb bit.

The size

They come in sizes: pony, cob, full, and extra full. The head size matters, not the horse's height at the withers. Pay attention to the circumference of the nose, the distance from the poll to the corner of the mouth, and the width of the forehead for the browband.
