How to get the right size

A tall riding boot is not chosen by shoe size alone. Three measurements are needed, and this is exactly what prevents the most returns:

  • Foot length, from toe to heel and standing up.
  • Height, from the ground to the hollow behind the knee.
  • Calf circumference, at its widest point.

Measure yourself wearing your riding breeches, not jeans or bare legs: the difference is several centimeters and is the most common reason why a boot won't zip up. Do it in the afternoon, as your feet and calves swell during the day.

Sizes for this model: 33 - UK 1, 34 - UK 2, 35 - UK 3, 36 - UK 3.5, 37 - UK 4.

This model is also sold by height size: JS (37cm), JM (38.5cm), JT (40cm). Choose it according to your leg measurement, not your shoe size.

This model is also sold by calf size: XS (27cm), S (28.5cm), M (30cm), L (31.5cm). Choose it according to your leg measurement, not your shoe size.

Several brands manufacture the same model in different shaft widths as separate references. If the calf circumference is a tight fit, look for the wide version before going up a shoe size.

Leather gives slightly in circumference with use and the shaft drops a few millimeters as creases form at the ankle, but it does not give in foot length: do not compensate for a short size hoping it will stretch. If you are between two sizes, choose the larger one.

Leather care

Remove mud as soon as you finish riding, before it dries: dry mud pulls the oils from the leather when it flakes off. Clean with a damp cloth and, from time to time, apply a specific leather conditioning product.

Let them dry away from radiators and direct sunlight: dry heat cracks the leather. Store them upright with boot trees or shapers to prevent the shaft from sagging.

How to get the right size

A tall riding boot is not chosen solely by foot size. Three measurements are needed, which is exactly what prevents most returns:

  • Foot length, from toe to heel while standing.
  • Height, from the ground to the hollow behind the knee.
  • Calf circumference, at its widest point.

Measure yourself wearing riding breeches, not jeans or bare legs: the difference can be several centimeters and is the most common cause of a boot not closing. Do it in the afternoon, as feet and calves swell during the day.

Sizes for this model: 33 - UK 1, 34 - UK 2, 35 - UK 3, 36 - UK 3.5, 37 - UK 4.

Several brands manufacture the same model in different shaft widths as separate references. If the calf circumference is too tight, look for the wide version before going up in foot size.

Leather stretches slightly in circumference with use, and the shaft drops a few millimeters when the ankle creases form, but the foot length does not stretch: do not compensate for a short size hoping it will stretch. If you are between two sizes, choose the larger one.

Frequently asked questions

Why do riding boots have a heel?

It is a safety measure: the heel prevents the foot from sliding and passing through the stirrup, which is what could cause a rider to become stuck in the event of a fall.

Do they stretch?

The leather stretches slightly in calf circumference with use, and the shaft drops a few millimeters as the ankle creases form. They do not stretch in foot length, so do not compensate for a short size hoping they will stretch.

How long do they take to break in?

It depends on the leather and usage, but it is best to keep the first sessions short. A new boot will feel tight at the instep and behind the knee until the creases form.
