How to get the right size

A tall riding boot is not chosen by shoe size alone. Three measurements are needed, and this is exactly what prevents the most returns:

  • Foot length, from toe to heel, while standing.
  • Height, from the ground to the hollow behind the knee.
  • Calf circumference, at its widest point.

Measure yourself while wearing your riding breeches, not jeans or with a bare leg: the difference is several centimeters and is the most common reason why a boot won't close. Do it in the afternoon, as the foot and calf swell during the day.

Sizes for this model: 33 - UK 1, 34 - UK 2, 35 - UK 3, 36 - UK 3.5, 37 - UK 4.

This model is also sold by height size: JS (37cm), JM (38.5cm), JT (40cm). Choose it according to your leg measurement, not by shoe size.

This model is also sold by calf size: XS (27cm), S (28.5cm), M (30cm), L (31.5cm). Choose it according to your leg measurement, not by shoe size.

Several brands manufacture the same model in different shaft widths as separate references. If the calf circumference is tight, look for the wide version before going up a shoe size.

Leather gives slightly in circumference with use and the shaft drops a few millimeters as creases form at the ankle, but it does not give in foot length: do not compensate for a short size hoping it will stretch. If you are between two, choose the larger one.

Leather care

Remove mud as soon as you finish riding, before it dries: dry mud pulls the oils from the leather when it flakes off. Clean with a damp cloth and, from time to time, apply a specific leather conditioner.

Let them dry away from radiators and direct sunlight: dry heat cracks the leather. Store them upright and with boot trees or stretchers so the shaft does not collapse.

How to get the right size

A tall riding boot is not chosen by foot size alone. Three measurements are needed, and this is exactly what prevents the most returns:

  • Foot length, from toe to heel and by foot.
  • Height, from the floor to the hollow behind the knee.
  • Calf circumference, at its widest point.

Measure yourself wearing your riding breeches, not jeans or bare legs: the difference is several centimeters and is the most common cause of a boot not closing.

Choose based on your leg measurement, not by foot size.

This model is also sold by calf size: XS (27cm), S (28.5cm), M (30cm), L (31.5cm). Choose based on your leg measurement, not by foot size.

Several brands manufacture the same model in different shaft widths as separate references. If the calf circumference is a tight fit, look for the wide version before going up in foot size.

The leather gives slightly in circumference with use and the shaft drops a few millimeters when the ankle creases form, but it does not give in foot length: do not compensate for a short size hoping it will stretch. If you are between two sizes, choose the larger one.

Frequently asked questions

Why do riding boots have a heel?

It is a safety measure: the heel prevents the foot from sliding and going through the stirrup, which is what causes a rider to get caught in a fall.

Do they stretch?

The leather gives slightly in calf circumference with use, and the shaft drops a few millimeters when the ankle creases form. They do not give in foot length, so do not compensate for a short size hoping they will stretch.

How long do they take to break in?

It depends on the leather and the use, but it is best to keep the first sessions short. A new boot will feel tight on the instep and behind the knee until the creases form.
