How to get the right size

A high riding boot is not chosen solely by shoe size. Three measurements are needed, and that is precisely what prevents the most returns:

  • Foot length, in centimeters, measured from toe to heel while standing.
  • Calf circumference, at the widest part, wearing riding breeches and the socks you intend to use.
  • Height, from the floor to just below the knee, while sitting with your leg bent at a right angle.

Measure yourself in the afternoon: your foot and calf swell throughout the day and that is the real measurement you will have while riding. Leather boots stretch slightly in circumference with use, but they do not stretch in length or height, so it is best not to force those two.

Leather care

Remove mud as soon as you finish riding, before it dries: once dry, it pulls the oil out of the leather when it flakes off. Clean with a damp cloth and, periodically, apply a specific leather conditioner.

Let them dry away from radiators and direct sunlight: dry heat causes leather to crack. Store them upright with boot trees or shapers so the shaft does not collapse.

Frequently asked questions

Why do riding boots have a heel?

It is a safety measure: the heel prevents the foot from sliding and going through the stirrup, which is what causes a rider to get caught in the event of a fall.

Do they stretch?

Leather gives slightly in calf circumference with use, and the shaft drops a few millimeters as the ankle creases form. They do not stretch in foot length, so do not compensate for a short size hoping they will stretch.

How long do they take to break in?

It depends on the leather and usage, but it is best to keep the first sessions short. A new boot will feel tight at the instep and behind the knee until it forms its creases.
