How to get the size right

A tall riding boot is not chosen based solely on shoe size. Three measurements are needed, and this is exactly what prevents the most returns:

  • Foot length, in centimeters, measured from toe to heel while standing.
  • Calf circumference, at the widest part, while wearing your riding breeches and the socks you plan to use.
  • Height, from the floor to just below the knee, while sitting with your leg bent at a right angle.

Measure yourself in the afternoon: your foot and calf swell throughout the day, and that is the actual measurement you will have while riding. A leather boot will stretch slightly in circumference with use, but it will not stretch in length or height, so you should not push those two measurements.

How to choose the right size

A high riding boot is not chosen by shoe size alone. Three measurements are needed, and this is precisely what avoids most returns:

  • Foot length, in centimeters, measured from toe to heel while standing.
  • Calf circumference, at the widest part, with riding breeches and the socks you intend to wear.
  • Height, from the ground to just below the knee, while sitting with your leg bent at a right angle.

Measure yourself in the afternoon: your foot and calf swell throughout the day, and that is the real measurement you will be riding with. A leather boot gives a little in circumference with use, but it does not give in length or height, so it is best not to force those two.

Leather care

Remove mud as soon as you finish riding, before it dries: when dry, it pulls the oil out of the leather as it flakes off. Clean with a damp cloth and, from time to time, apply a specific leather moisturizing product.

Let them dry away from radiators and direct sunlight: dry heat cracks the leather. Store them upright with boot trees or shapers so the shaft does not collapse.

Frequently asked questions

Why do riding boots have a heel?

It is a safety measure: the heel prevents the foot from sliding and passing through the stirrup, which is what could cause a rider to get stuck in the event of a fall.

Do they stretch?

Leather gives slightly in calf circumference with use, and the shaft drops a few millimeters as the ankle creases form. They do not give in foot length, so do not compensate for a short size hoping they will stretch.

How long do they take to break in?

It depends on the leather and usage, but it is best to keep the first few sessions short. A new boot will feel tight on the instep and behind the knee until the creases form.
