How to get the right size
A high riding boot is not chosen solely by foot size. Three measurements are needed, and this is precisely what prevents the most returns:
- Foot length, in centimeters, measured from toe to heel while standing.
- Calf circumference, at the widest part, with riding breeches on and the socks you intend to wear.
- Height, from the ground to just below the knee, sitting with your leg bent at a right angle.
Measure yourself in the afternoon: your foot and calf swell throughout the day and that is the real measurement you will be riding with. A leather boot gives a little in circumference with use, but it does not give in length or height, so it is best not to force those two.
Leather care
Remove mud as soon as you finish riding, before it dries: when dry, it pulls the grease out of the leather as it flakes off. Clean with a damp cloth and, from time to time, apply a specific moisturizing product for leather.
Let them dry away from radiators and direct sunlight: dry heat cracks the leather. Store them upright and with boot trees or shapers so the shaft does not collapse.
Frequently asked questions
Why do riding boots have a heel?
It is a safety measure: the heel prevents the foot from slipping and passing through the stirrup, which is what could cause a rider to get caught during a fall.
Do they stretch?
The leather gives a little in calf circumference with use, and the shaft drops a few millimeters as the ankle creases form. Foot length does not stretch, so do not compensate for a short size hoping they will stretch.
How long do they take to break in?
It depends on the leather and usage, but it is best to keep the first sessions short. A new boot feels tight on the instep and behind the knee until it develops its creases.
