How to get the right size

A tall riding boot is not chosen by shoe size alone. Three measurements are needed, and that is exactly what avoids most returns:

  • Foot length, in centimeters, measured from toe to heel while standing.
  • Calf circumference, at the widest part, wearing your riding breeches and the socks you intend to use.
  • Height, from the ground to just below the knee, while seated with your leg bent at a right angle.

Measure yourself in the afternoon: your foot and calf swell throughout the day, and that is the true measurement you will be riding with. Leather boots will stretch slightly in circumference with use, but they do not stretch in length or height, so it is best not to force those two measurements.

Leather care

Remove mud as soon as you finish riding, before it dries: once dry, it pulls the natural oils out of the leather when it flakes off. Clean with a damp cloth and apply a leather-specific moisturizing product from time to time.

Let them dry away from radiators and direct sunlight: dry heat causes leather to crack. Store them upright with boot trees or shapers to prevent the shaft from collapsing.

Frequently asked questions

Why do riding boots have a heel?

It is a safety measure: the heel prevents the foot from slipping and passing through the stirrup, which is what can cause a rider to get caught during a fall.

Do they stretch out?

The leather will stretch slightly in calf circumference with use, and the shaft will drop a few millimeters as the ankle creases form. They do not stretch in foot length, so do not compensate for a short size hoping they will stretch.

How long does it take to break them in?

It depends on the leather and usage, but it is best to keep your first few sessions short. A new boot will feel tight on the instep and behind the knee until the creases form.
