How to get the right size

A high riding boot is not chosen just by shoe size. Three measurements are required, and that is exactly what prevents the most returns:

  • Foot length, in centimeters, measured from toe to heel while standing.
  • Calf circumference, at the widest part, with riding breeches and the socks you intend to wear.
  • Height, from the ground to just below the knee, sitting with the leg bent at a right angle.

Measure yourself in the afternoon: your foot and calf swell throughout the day and that is the actual size you will be riding with. A leather boot will stretch slightly in circumference with use, but it does not stretch in length or height, so it is not advisable to force those two.

Leather care

Remove mud as soon as you finish riding, before it dries: dry mud pulls the oils out of the leather when it flakes off. Clean with a damp cloth and, from time to time, apply a specific moisturizing product for leather.

Let them dry away from radiators and direct sunlight: dry heat causes leather to crack. Store them upright and with boot trees or shapers so the shaft does not collapse.

Frequently asked questions

Why do riding boots have a heel?

It is a safety measure: the heel prevents the foot from slipping and going through the stirrup, which is what could cause a rider to get caught during a fall.

Do they stretch?

The leather stretches somewhat in calf circumference with use, and the shaft drops a few millimeters as the ankle creases form. They do not stretch in foot length, so do not compensate for a short size hoping they will stretch.

How long do they take to break in?

It depends on the leather and usage, but it is best to keep your first few sessions short. A new boot will feel tight on the instep and behind the knee until it forms its creases.
