How to get the size right

A tall riding boot is not chosen based solely on shoe size. Three measurements are needed, and this is exactly what prevents the most returns:

  • Foot length, in centimeters, measured from toe to heel while standing.
  • Calf circumference, at the widest part, while wearing your riding breeches and the socks you plan to use.
  • Height, from the floor to just below the knee, while sitting with your leg bent at a right angle.

Measure yourself in the afternoon: your foot and calf swell throughout the day, and that is the actual measurement you will have while riding. A leather boot will stretch slightly in circumference with use, but it will not stretch in length or height, so you should not push those two measurements.

How to choose the right size

A tall riding boot is not chosen by shoe size alone. Three measurements are needed, and this is exactly what prevents the most returns:

  • Foot length, in centimeters, measured from toe to heel while standing.
  • Calf circumference, at the widest part, with your breeches on and the socks you intend to wear.
  • Height, from the floor to just below the knee, sitting with the leg bent at a right angle.

Measure yourself in the afternoon: your foot and calf swell throughout the day, and that is the actual size you will be riding in. A leather boot gives a little in circumference with use, but it does not give in length or height, so those two should not be forced.

Leather care

Remove mud as soon as you finish riding, before it dries: dry mud pulls the oils from the leather when it flakes off. Clean with a damp cloth and, periodically, apply a specific leather conditioner.

Let them dry away from radiators and direct sunlight: dry heat causes the leather to crack. Store them upright and with boot trees or shapers so the shaft does not collapse.

Frequently asked questions

Why do riding boots have a heel?

It is a safety measure: the heel prevents the foot from sliding and going through the stirrup, which is what could cause a rider to get caught in the event of a fall.

Do they stretch?

The leather gives slightly in calf circumference with use, and the shaft drops a few millimeters as the ankle creases form. They do not stretch in foot length, so do not compensate for a short size hoping they will stretch.

How long do they take to break in?

It depends on the leather and usage, but it is best to keep initial sessions short. A new boot feels tight at the instep and behind the knee until it breaks in.
