The Airy LM from Equithème is a riding helmet, the LM version of the Airy, in black carbon, glossy black and shiny blue.
It is fitted with the MIPS system, designed for oblique impacts, which account for most of the impacts in a real fall.
What is the MIPS system?
MIPS stands for Multi-directional Impact Protection System. It is a low-friction inner layer that lets the helmet shell move a few millimetres relative to the head during an impact. Most falls are not perpendicular blows but oblique ones, and that is where this small amount of play helps reduce the rotation transmitted to the skull. It is a licensed technology: only helmets that have it built in at the factory include it.
Certification
Each helmet's certification is printed on a label inside it, together with the date of manufacture. It shows the standard and the certifying body; this is the information your federation asks for, and it is worth checking when you receive it.

How to choose the right size
Wrap a soft tape measure around your head, above the ears and around the widest part of the skull. The measurement in centimetres is what counts, not your usual cap size.

A helmet must sit firmly without pressing: it should not move when you lower your head or turn when you shake it. If you are between two sizes, the dial or rear adjustment system gives some leeway within each size.

When should a helmet be replaced?
After any heavy impact, even if nothing shows on the outside: the shock-absorbing material works by deforming and will not protect in the same way again. Over the years it also loses absorption capacity even if you have never fallen.
How do I clean it?
The inner padding is usually removable: hand wash it in lukewarm water with mild soap and let it air dry. Clean the shell with a damp cloth only. Never use solvents or a washing machine, and never dry it in direct sunlight or with heat.
